BRAZILIAN CHORO AND SAMBA WITH KATIA MORAES AND TED FALCON featuring BANDA BRASIL

Saturday, May 15, 2010 7:30 PM

"...Moraes' singing, as always, was a virtual definition of the passion that is an implicit part of Brazilian music." - Los Angeles Times A rare opportunity to see famed Brazilian singer Katia Moraes team up with South American folk authority Ted Falcon from the Los Angeles Choro Ensemble. Choro is considered the first popular music of Brazil and often described as the "New Orleans style jazz" from South America. The style often has a fast and happy rhythm, characterized by virtuosity and improvisation. The Brazilian singer and lyricist Katia Moraes began her career in Rio de Janeiro in the 80's with her energetic band "O Espirito da Coisa" . Since then she has performed and/or recorded with top Brazilian acts like Sergio Mendes, Airto Moreira and Oscar Castro-Neves. Kátia currently performs with Sambaguru and Pure Samba (which was awarded an L.A. Treasure Award by the Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department). Ted Falcon has had a varied and impressive career as a violinist, working with such diverse artists as Suzanne Vega, Weezer and Brazilian legend Gilberto Gil. Though violin is rarely seen in Choro music, Ted's knowledge and skills within the artform led to a professorship at one of the most famous music schools in Brazil. Banda Brasil includes some of the finest Brazilian folk artists in the country.
